Mary McRae Lee transitioned peacefully at McLeod Hospice in Florence, S.C., on Saturday evening, May 12th, 2018. Mary was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Mary and her twin sister, Sarah McRae Rowan, were born on January 16th, 1938, in Lumberton, NC, to Adrian Bannerman and Laelia Pate McRae. Her family moved to the A. W. Pate home place three miles north of Rowland when Mary was a young girl.
Mary married Ralph Sykes Lee of Hamer, SC. They moved to Rowland where they lived their entire married life.
Surviving Mary are her two children, Ralph Sykes Lee, Jr. and Adrienne McRae Lee, and a beloved granddaughter, Lauren Pate Lee. Also surviving Mary are her two sisters, Doris McRae Moore and Sarah McRae Rowan, as well as their children.
Mary was a lifelong member of Rowland United Methodist Church serving as treasurer many years, Sunday School teacher, and church nursery volunteer. Humility graced Mary’s life. Generosity, compassion, and concern, not only for her family but for all of humanity, were her hallmarks. Her life was her message.
Mary created a beautiful and welcoming home with lovely gardens where she spent many happy hours outdoors enjoying God’s creation. She had a tender heart for animals and always had at least one rescue dog as a pet. She was a wonderful cook, hosting her extended family for many joyful holiday feasts.
