Melva Simmons Elmer, 73, of Dillon, passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.
Mrs. Elmer was born a daughter of Albert Waldo Simmons and Melva LeGette Simmons. She was born in Salisbury, NC, but grew up in Arlington, VA and Mamaroneck, NY. She graduated from Rye Neck Senior High School in Mamaroneck, NY in 1962. In 1969, Mrs. Elmer moved to Washington, DC where she began her career as an administrative assistant at the Smithsonian Institute, eventually becoming the Assistant to the Director of the National Zoo, from where she retired in 2000. Mrs. Elmer moved to Dillon, SC in 2007.
Mrs. Elmer is survived by her husband, William Alvin Elmer; niece, Angela “Gigi” Dalton of Clarksville, MD; nephew, Jeffrey Lieberman of Washington, DC, great niece, Evelyn and nephews, Zane and Zachary.
In addition to parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Simmons Lieberman.
A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Arlington, VA. The family is being assisted by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home.
