Margaret Plat Pollard died February 17, 2018. For the last three months of her life, she resided with her son in Little River, South Carolina. Prior to her residing in Little River, she lived with her daughter Michele on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. She was a retired medical technologist, having worked for many years at Duke Hospital. One of her many cousins, Dr. W. Leroy Harrelson, was the first mayor of Myrtle Beach. Her stepfather, George Gibbs McKerall, was a former mayor of Marion, South Carolina.
After having read her Bible through the first time (she was on her third reading at the time of her death), she realized the need for water baptism by immersion. As a result, at the age of 87, with the help of her pastor and her son, she was baptized in Pamlico Sound.
Margaret was born in Mullins, South Carolina, on April 23, 1925, the daughter of the late John Baxter Platt and Anna Cartwright Platt. She was the granddaughter of Robert Baxter Platt and Addie Corrine Harelson Platt. She was also the granddaughter of Samuel Matthew Cartwright and Martha Berry Cartwright.
Margaret is survived by all her children: George Thomas Samaha, III, and his wife, Barbara MacMillan Samaha; Susan Samaha DeClue; Michele Samaha Robinson; and Katherine Lunney Pinkleton and her husband Chris. She is survived by twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren (with four more to be born this year). She is also survived by her uncle Jim Cartwright and his wife Elsie.
The family would like to express thanks to the staff members of Lower Cape Fear Hospice Mercy Care for their faithful service to Margaret. Memorial may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Mercy Care by calling 800-733-1476 or by going on-line to www.MercyHospice.org.
