John L. Hatchell, Jr., 74, passed away at Pawleys Island, SC in mid-February. He was son of the late John L. Hatchell, Sr. and Mildred (Hicks) Hatchell of Dillon, SC, and a graduate of Dillon High School (Class of 1962). John was known affectionately by family and friends as “Jack.” He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in political science from Appalachian State University, Boone, NC in 1967.
Following graduation, he taught history and economics and served as athletic coach in the Barnwell Public School System, SC. From 1970 to 1974, he was City Planner, City of Rock Hill, York Co., SC.; from 1974-1979, Jack was City Manager, City of York, SC; from 1979-1987, he was County Manager of Horry County, SC; from 1987-1992, he was City Manager of Fort Mill, York County, SC; from 1992-1995, he was City Manager of Mullins, Marion County, SC, and from 1995-2008, Jack was Head of the Georgetown Water District, Georgetown County, SC, retiring in 2008.
Jack enjoyed travel, politics, sports, cooking, and physical recreation, and was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church at Pawley’s Island. He is survived by his brother, William (“Bill”) Hatchell of Santa Fe, NM, good friend Richard Brown of Santa Fe, and cousins Jeanette (Hatchell) Hatcher (Jim) of North Charleston, SC, Rodger F. Hatchell (Jeri) of Florence, SC, Ronald O. Hatchell (Elsie) of Effingham, SC, and Lendol C. Hicks (Dale) of Columbia, SC.
Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
