The recent completion of Spectrum’s broadband expansion project in Dillon County, South Carolina, marks a significant milestone in improving internet access for rural communities. Alex Gonzalez, Area VP of Operations for Spectrum, emphasized the transformative impact the project will have on residents and small businesses alike. The expansion, which began in March 2022 and was completed in September 2024, successfully connected 3,600 homes and small businesses across a sprawling 392-mile area.
Before this initiative, many rural areas in Dillon County suffered from poor or nonexistent internet service, which hindered access to essential services and opportunities that are more commonly available in urban areas. With the installation of fiber-optic cable and, residents now have access to high-speed internet, enabling them to engage in activities like video streaming, remote work, online education, and telemedicine—essential services that many urban communities take for granted.
Daniel Coleman, of DL Coleman & Son Farms, spoke to The Dillon Herald about what this means for his business. “We operate a family farm in rural Dillon county. Over the years we have experienced mediocre cell service around our farm which has hindered multiple aspects of every day activities including online research and communications that are imperative to timely success. Since being connected to spectrums broadband, we have experienced flawless internet that has allowed us to save time and money. We appreciate all who were involved in bringing broadband to our rural business”, he said.
Key Benefits of Broadband Expansion in Dillon County:
1.Economic Growth: By expanding broadband infrastructure, Spectrum is not just improving internet speeds but also providing a platform for small businesses to thrive through e-commerce and digital tools. Additionally, the expansion helps attract remote workers and businesses, boosting job opportunities and contributing to local economic development.
2.Enhanced Education: With more reliable internet, students in Dillon County now have access to distance learning, which was previously a significant challenge. Broadband access helps bridge the digital divide, ensuring that rural students can learn and access resources comparable to their urban counterparts.
3.Improved Healthcare: Access to telemedicine services can be a game-changer for residents in remote areas, offering them healthcare options that they may not have had before. This can help reduce travel time and costs for medical consultations and follow-up care.
4.Better Quality of Life: Broadband access enhances the overall quality of life by enabling residents to stay connected with family, access entertainment, and stay informed about news and events. It strengthens community ties and fosters a sense of belonging, even in more isolated areas.
As Gonzalez notes, while the current project is complete, Spectrum is committed to continuing its expansion efforts. This ongoing development will ensure that even more rural areas in Dillon County benefit from the advantages of reliable, high-speed internet. The project is a vital step toward ensuring that all South Carolinians, regardless of where they live, have the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
