Edward Legrand McKenzie, 78, passed away at McLeod Hospital in Florence, SC on Monday, January 30, 2023 surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday February 2, 2023 at Cooper Funeral Home, in Dillon, SC, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at Legrand’s home at 2306 Hwy 301 North, Dillon, SC on Wednesday February 1, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Born December 3, 1944 in Dillon County, SC to Rufus McKenzie and Pauline Hyatt McKenzie, he resided his entire life in Dillon and was an active member of the community.
After serving in the United States Navy, Legrand or “Granny” as he was known to friends and family, worked several years for Dupont Manufacturing, and then embarked with his late wife, Johnsie Coley McKenzie, on their beloved journey as owner-operators of Granny’s One Stop (Later Granny’s Lounge and Tavern) on Highway 301 in Dillon, where they would serve delicious food and spirits and entertain patrons for forty plus years before retiring. Legrand was especially proud of the feasts and fun times had at his “Pond Parties” where crowds would gather from all around to hear a variety of live music from local bands.
Legrand was preceded in death by his loving wife of 46 years, Johnsie Coley McKenzie on August 14, 2021. He is survived by his son, Edward Leary McKenzie (Katie) and his granddaughter, Madison Katie McKenzie. He also leaves behind his loving step-daughters: Mary Alice Deaver, Patricia Ann Bohachic (Jimmy), Ruby Lee Brumble, all of Dillon, and 9 step-grandchildren: Steven Reaves (Jane), Nickie Williams, Jimmy Brumble, Jr. (Debbie), Michael Terrence Brumble, Robert Charles Ray (Sharon), James Mikey Bohachic (Mary), Johnsie Elizabeth Bohachic, and John Coley Bohachic (Candace).
Legrand is survived by his sister, Joyce McKenzie Petts of Norfolk, VA and J.R. McKenzie (Margaret) of Dillon. He was predeceased by his brother, Johnny McKenzie (Joan) of Lake View, and sister, Linda Johnson (Joe) of Lincolnton, NC. Legrand also leaves behind numerous nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Legrand’s name to the Dillon Kiwanis Club and St. Jude.
