The World We Are Living In
Dear Editor:
Having taught American Literature for many years, I never failed to introduce the students to the poetry of Emily Dickinson (1830-1886). Now, as I consider the alarming state of affairs in America today, I have felt compelled to present one to your readers in the exact format as Miss Dickinson wrote it in 1862:
Much Madness is divinest Sense—
To a discerning Eye—
Much Sense—the starkest Madness—
‘Tis the Majority
In this, as All, prevail—
Assent—and you are sane—
Demur—you’re straightway dangerous—
And handled with a Chain—
(What an amazing description of the world we are living in today.)
