The Latta Lady Vikings defeated the visiting Andrews Lady Yellowjackets 71-17 in varsity basketball action played in Latta on Wednesday, February 9.
Andrews controlled the opening tip-off. After that, Latta took control
Andrews was faced with a difficult challenge facing the AA Region 7 conference champs, the Latta Lady Vikings on the Vikings’ home court. Andrews’ squad played the entire game on the court having dressed only 5 players on the team.
Latta’s Kalitya Herman placed the first 2 points onto the scoreboard with a lay-up followed by Makayla Legette’s 3-point basket who quickly followed with another 3-point basket. The rout was on. Shawniza Bethea rolled one in for 2 points followed by Kaliya Herman who connected for a 3-point basket and followed that basket with a lay-up for 2 points.
With 3:13 remaining in the first quarter, Kaliya Herman made another lay-up. Shawniza Bethea scored a 2-point basket followed by another 2-point basket.
Makayla Legette connected for 3 points from the corner.
After the first quarter, Latta was up 24-0 and had committed only 2 fouls while Andrews had committed only 3 fouls.
Latta substituted regularly with each player making a contribution to the game. By halftime, Latta was up 50-5. Latta committed 3 fouls in the second quarter, and Andrews committed 2 fouls.
The third quarter began with Makayla Legette hitting a 3-point basket for Latta. Andrews’ Ionica Scott made a lay-up.
Latta was up 61-10 after 3 quarters of play. Andrews did not commit a foul in the third quarter while Latta committed 3 fouls. In the fourth quarter each team committed a foul.
Andrews did not give up during the entire game as all five of Andrews’ players were on the court the entire game.
Latta’s Shawniza Bethea led all players with 17 points. She connected on seven 2-point shots and a 3-point shot. Makayla Legette added 16 points with four 3-point baskets and two 2-point baskets. Kaliya Herman had 11 points with four 2-point baskets and a 3-point basket.
Kenasia George had three 2-point baskets and a 3-point basket for 9 points. Azarionna McRae sank three 2-point shots for 6 points.
Layla Hyatt placed 4 points onto the scoreboard with two 2- point baskets. Jasmine Jones, Jayla Jenkins, and Kayla Hennegan each had a 2-point basket.
Andrews’ Shaniya Coachman had two 2-point baskets and 2 free throws for 6 points. Ionica Scott had two 2-point baskets and a free throw for 5 points. Meagan Thompson scored a 3-point basket and a free throw for 4 points. Maddie Berry sank a 2-point basket.
