The Dillon Lady Wildcats edged the visiting Seneca Lady Bobcats 3-2 in the first round of the AAA varsity softball state playoffs held in Dillon on Tuesday, June 1, before a large crowd.
With 2 outs in the bottom of the first inning, Dillon managed to get a runner on first on Abby Bristow’s grounder to second on a fielding error. Bristow stole second. The scoring threat was ended on a fly ball to right.
Seneca’s E. Williams led off the top of the second inning with a long hit between center and right for a stand-up double. A. Brown hit one to right for a single and the first rbi of the game to give Seneca a 1-0 lead.
Dillon was unable to score in the bottom of the second inning although Lexie Rogers led off with a hit over third for a lead-off single. Ny Wilson had a sac bunt to move Rogers to second but advanced no further.
The Lady Bobcats were sat down in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the third inning but still led 1-0.
Dillon’s Jenascia Lester led off the bottom of the third inning with a chopper to deep short for a single. She wasted little time in stealing second base. Cierra Grice hit a grounder to third and arrived safely at first, and Lester moved to third base. Qy Wilson had a sac hit grounder to second, and Lester scored to knot the game at 1. With 2 outs, Abby Bristow sac bunted to first to score the go-ahead run for Dillon. After 3 innings of play, Dillon led 2-1.
Seneca’s N. Windham hit a deep grounder to third and arrived safely at first in the top of the fourth inning. Windham stole second base. E. Williams hit one to center for a double and a rbi to knot the score at 2. With one out Williams was thrown out at third. C. Crensha hit a grounder by third for a single followed by L. Ransom who was hit by a pitch. Seneca once again had a scoring threat with runners on first and second. The threat ended with a stike-out.
The game remained tied at 2 until the bottom of the sixth inning. After a Dillon strike-out, Logan Grice hit one between center and right for a stand-up double. Ny Wilson hit a grounder to deep short, Logan Grice scored, and Wilson was out between second and first. Seneca’s A. Moore hit a grounder to second and was out at first. Y. Hayes punched one over third for a single. S. Hayes flew out to center. A. Scott hit one over the pitcher’s head and was safe at first with runners on first and second with 2 outs. N. Windham lined to first for the last out of the game.
Dillon’s Paige Sherman picked up the win. She pitched 7 innings and allowed 9 hits, struck out 7, walked no one, and allowed 2 earned runs.
M. Martin took the loss of Seneca. She pitched 6 innings and allowed 6 hits, walked 1, struck out 5, and allowed 3 earned runs. Dillon’s Ny Wilson had a single and a rbi in 1 at-bat while Abby Bristow picked up a rbi in her 2 at-bats. Qy Wilson picked up a rbi in her 3 at-bats. Cierra Grice had 2 singles in her 3 at-bats while Jenascia Lester had a single in 2 at-bats. Logan Grice had a double in 3 at-bats, and Lexie Rogers had a single in 3 at-bats. Seneca’s E. Williama had 2 doubles and a rbi in her 3 at-bats while A. Brown had 2 singles and a rbi in her 3 at-bats. A. Scott had 2 singles in 4 at-bats. C. Crensha and Y. Hayes had a single in 3 at-bats while N. Windham had a single in 4 at-bats. Each team committed an error in the game.
Dillon will travel to Seneca today (Thursday, June 3) to face Seneca in the second game of the series. Support your team.
