To the Editor:
On behalf of the Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault I would like to add to Bishop Michael Goings’ tribute to Mrs. Ruby Carter.
When the Pee Dee Coalition began in 1986 we were blessed to have what I began to call the “Spelman 4” in our corner.
Mrs. Ruby Carter was one of those four – all of which were powerful advocates, women of wise counsel, and ready to assist in numerous ways to address sexual and family violence in their respective Pee Dee counties. All were graduates of the nationally recognized Spelman College in Atlanta.
While Dillon was the last of our counties of service to have an in-county presence Mrs. Carter was instrumental in that reality as well as using her network to put us in touch with key people who could further the Coalition’s mission of reducing sexual assault, child abuse, and family violence while trying to assist victims. She could always be counted on to be a critical listener and problem solver and we will miss her greatly.
We trust there are those who have been the beneficiary of her influence that will honor her legacy by passing those lessons on. Count us in that group.
