The students at East Elementary in Dillon have once again proven they have caring and giving hearts.
In February, the Kindergarten students began collecting funds to help the homeless cats and dogs at the Dillon County Animal Shelter. By April, they had collected the amazing amount of $775.00!
They are donating their collection to the Shelter to be used to fund fast-kill heartworm treatment for three dogs who are suffering from this dread disease.
Heartworm disease is very common in our area because it is transmitted by mosquitoes. Although it is highly preventable if dogs are given the proper medication, most of the dogs entering the Shelter have had no one to care for their health needs and are consequently doomed to a miserable, lonely death if not treated.
The donation of this money by these generous children will save the lives of three dogs and will make them more adoptable.
The Humane Society of Dillon County provides preventative medication for dogs currently at the Shelter so they won’t contract heartworms there. But this, in itself, is an expensive project, and there is no money to fund fast-kill treatments for dogs already suffering from the disease.
Fast-kill treatment is very expensive, usually costing between $250-300 per dog, and it is based on the weight of the animal.
These East Elementary Kindergarten children would like to challenge the citizens of Dillon County to help fund treatments for more needy dogs.
You can contribute to the Humane Society of Dillon County, 4160 Glasdrum Drive, Little Rock, SC 29567 or Pay Pal to Humanesocietyofdilloncounty@gmail.com.
Note on your contribution that it is for the Heartworm Project.
The Humane Society of Dillon County is a 501(c)3 organization, and your contributions are tax-deductible.
