The Latta Vikings dropped a 14-9 decision to non-conference foe West Florence on Wednesday, March 27, in Florence in varsity baseball.
The Vikings wasted little time placing a run on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. However, West Florence responded with 6 runs of their own to take a 6-1 lead that Latta could not over take. Latta placed a run on the scoreboard in the top of the second and third innings. Once again, West Florence responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the second inning and 1 run in the bottom of the third inning. The Vikings added a run in the top of the fourth inning. West Florence added 4 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Latta responded with 4 runs in the top of the sixth inning. West Florence added a run bottom of the sixth. The final run of the game was a run in the top of the seventh inning in this high-scoring affair.
West Florence managed 13 hits in the game while holding Latta to 7 hits.
West Florence’s G. Floyd managed 3 singles, 2 rbi, and scored 2 runs in his 5 at-bats. G. Wallace had a double, a single, and scored 2 runs in his 5 at-bats. D. Synder had 2 doubles, a rbi, and scored a run in his 5 at-bats. G. Herbert had a double, a walk, a rbi, and scored 2 runs in his 4 plate appearances. N. Edick had a single, a walk, a rbi, and scored a run in his 4 plate appearances. J. William had a single, a rbi, and scored a run in his 4 at-bats. Kelly was perfect at the plate with a single and a rbi in his 1 at-bat. E. White had a single, a walk, a rbi, and scored 2 runs in his 4 plate appearances. Susss was perfect at the plate with a single and a rbi in his 1 at-bat. Mason Shelor scored a run in his 1 at-bat.
Dylan Brewer had a grand slam in the sixth inning for Latta. He also garnered a walk and scored 2 runs in his 4 plate appearances. Parker McCormick had 2 singles, a rbi, and scored 2 runs in his 3 at-bats. Hunter Sawyer had 2 singles and 2 rib in his 4 at-bats. Deonte’ Stanley had a single and scored a run in his 4 at-bats. Chandler Matthews had a double and scored a run in his 4 at-bats. Cole Gasque had a single in his 3 at-bats. Trey Anderson had a rbi in the game. Chandler Nolan scored a run. Chase Mishue garnered 2 walks in his 4 plate appearances.
Driggers picked up the win for West Florence. He pitched 5 innings and allowed 4 hits, walked 2, struck out 4, and allowed 7 runs of which 5 were earned. Hare started the game. He pitched 2 innings and allowed 3 hits, walked 1, struck out 2, and allowed 2 runs of which 1 was earned.
Peyton Benson was charged with the loss. He pitched 0.1 inning and allowed 5 hits and 6 runs of which 3 were earned. Jamison Herring pitched an inning. He allowed 2 hits, struck out 1, walked no one, and allowed 1 earned run. Preston Tyler pitched 2 innings. He allowed 2 hits, walked 1, struck out 2, and allowed 4 runs that were not earned. Andrew Bryant pitched 2.2 innings. He allowed 4 hits, walked 2, allowed 3 runs of which 1 was earned.
Both teams were plagued with errors as Latta committed 7, and West Florence committed 5 errors.
Latta will face Andrews at home today (Tuesday, April 2) for a 6:00 p.m. game.
