The April 3rd, 2018, monthly meeting for the Dillon Historic School Foundation (DHSF) was fast paced and covered a lot of ground. After the Call to Order and Invocation by Chairman Lorene Arnette and Vice-Chairman Abbott Shelley respectively, members stood for the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag. The March minutes were presented by Secretary Mary Miller and were approved with no corrections. Treasurer Barbara Herring provided the Treasures Report.
The meeting then acted to finalize short-term goals for the organization. Immediate goals include seeking grants and other sources of funding, repairs and restoration for the buildings located on the J. V. Martin campus with priorities for the historic Auditorium and White Building.
Additionally, the group plans to seek ways to increase public awareness of the organizational goals and priorities, create interest in new memberships, and consider a variety of opportunities to raise needed funds. The ultimate goal is to have the buildings available for community use and enjoyment.
According to available information, the J. V. Martin Auditorium has the largest seating capacity and largest stage of any other facility in the greater Pee Dee and Border Belt area, with the single exception of Givens Performing Arts Center at Pembroke University.
Old business addressed planning for a spring event, potential repairs for the deteriorating Auditorium windows, and renovations and cleaning for the White Building.
Barbara Herring presented a positive report on membership renewals and donations. She also reported on the status of filing required State and Federal forms.
Betty Lou Barclay reported on her contacts to civic clubs and other organizations interested in having Dillon Historic School Foundation provide speakers for their programs. She reported there has been a very receptive response to date and will continue with her contacts.
New business followed with discussion and approval of purchasing tables and chairs and ordering stationary printed with the DHSF logo. Deneene Herring reported a grant application had been completed and mailed. Notification of approval will be in several months. Lorene Arnette and Mary Miller provided updates on the status of moving newly acquired kitchen equipment to J. V. Martin and construction of the protective masonry wall for the White Building’s crawl space. Betty Lou Barclay made a suggestion that we consider a Main Street campaign to enlist interest and support of the businesses and merchants in Dillon.
The group scheduled a planning workshop meeting for Tuesday afternoon, April 10th, 2018, at 2:30 p.m. and adjourned with a reminder by Chairman Arnette that the next DHSF meeting will be Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m., on May 1st, 2018, at the Dillon Chamber of Commerce Conference Room.
