The Ann Fulmore Harllee Chapter #1740 of the UDC met on Thursday, May 11, 2017 with Fay Sloan. Chaplain Chris Harris opened the meeting with prayer and then led in a memorial service for the deceased daughters of the past year. Julie N. McIntyre of this Chapter was one of these.
President Mattie Strickland presided over the business session and reported on several bits of information from the district director. Fay Sloan gave a financial report, and the Chapter has met its responsibilities and continues to be in good standing.
Chris Harris presented the program, “The Forgotten Who Moved the Army”. We are very familiar with Gen. Robert E. Lee’s horse, Traveler, and Gen. Thomas Jackson’s horse, Little Sorrell, but there were huge numbers of horses and mules serving in the Army. They pulled and carried the infantry, Calvary, and artillery throughout the four years of war. The men learned to take better care of the animals than of themselves. Food and water was very scarce for the men and animals.
A favorite Richmond, Virginia historical marker is the poor, worn out, emaciated War Horse located in front of the Virginia Historical Society.
The inscription on the granite reads: In memory of the one and the one half million horses and mules of the Confederate and the Union armies who were killed, were wounded and died from disease in the Civil War.
Delightful refreshments were served by the hostess and the meeting was adjourned.
