The Dillon Debs Dixie Softball team handed Sumter an 18-1 loss in the softball state championship played in Marion on Saturday, July 15.
The Dillon team retired Sumter 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning before scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Brittany Miller picked up the first rbi on a single to right field. Erin Bailey scored on a passed ball. Madison Bailey garnered a walk and arrived home on a fly ball hit by Shala Hunt that was dropped in centerfield. Emilee Price dropped one in over second for a single and then stole second base but was thrown out attempting to score on a single by Leah Stephens that was hit by first base.
With only one out and runners on second and third in the top of the second inning, Sumter was unable to get a run across home plate.
Brandi Turner popped one over first for a lead-off single in the bottom of the second and advanced to second on a grounder by Kurstin Hopkins to second. Turner stole third to set up her scoring on the next single over third base by Tori Grimsley. Grimsley advanced to third on a single by Erin Bailey. Brittany Miller garnered a walk.
Madison Bailey picked up a single and a rbi on a hit to right. Sumter’s starting pitcher, Murray, was replaced by Posey. Dillon’s Shala Hunt dropped one in left field and picked up 2 rbi. After 2 innings of play Dillon held a commanding 12-0 lead.
Sumter’s lone run came in the top of the third inning off a single by #12 who advanced to second on a passed ball. #17, Josie, hit one over second for a single and the rbi.
Kurstin Hopkins for Dillon led off with a bunt. Tori Grimsley garnered a walk. Brittany Miller hit a grounder to short but the throw to third was missed, and the bases were loaded. The runner on third scored on a passed ball, and the runners advanced to second and third. Madison Bailey picked up a rbi while being thrown out at first. Dillon’s Shala Hunt hit a grounder down the third base line for a double and 2 rbi. Ashley Sanderson hit a grounder to third and beat the throw to first for a single and a rbi. Emilee Price garnered a walk. Tykandi Bethea arrived at first on a dead ball to load the bases . Sumter inserted #12 as pitcher. Ashley Sanderson and Emilee Price each scored to end the inning leading 18-1.
The Dillon Debs played Kershaw on Monday, July 16, 7 p.m.
