To The Editor:
In response to the yes or no question about I-73 being a good thing or a bad thing for Dillon County.
I have heard enough of gloom and doom about this great place we live called Dillon County and I am not about to start being jealous or envious over our rich neighbors to the east. We all like to go to the beach once in a while, let our hair down, spend money like we got plenty of it; then, we come back to Dillon County and complain about a delicious meal that costs less than $10, and we just paid much, much more than that to our rich neighbors to the east.
What Dillon County leadership needs to do, if they want to make a buck, is forget about I-73 and figure out a way to help feed this hungry neighbor to our east. Tractor trailers are pouring into the beach area daily hauling everything from A to Z to feed the hungry maul of Horry County. Have you got any idea how many millions of dollars is sold in souvenirs that people buy to remember their vacation? Surely we could learn to make and market some of these products.
Dillon County has produced some of the brightest minds, honest, hard-working people in this great country we live in called The United States of America. Food products are a huge market in the beach area. It seems like most folks are willing to pay from $40 to $100 for just a meal while visiting the beach area. We have a cold storage building shut down going into Dillon on Highway 9 while trucks are rolling through our county hauling food products to the beach area.
The silver lining to this letter to my friends and neighbors of Dillon County is to learn how to produce and market some of the food, souvenirs, clothing, and any other product vacationers love to spend money on. The key to prosperity is to serve others.
The late Michael Jackson said in one of his songs, “If you want to make a buck, get off your butt and make a change.” I-73 is coming through, like it or not. Enough of gloom and doom. Let’s give them, our rich neighbors to the east, what they want and need and bring some of that vacation money back to Dillon County.
