Dear Editor:
On May 20, 2017, Latta Rescue Squad celebrated our 50th year of making a difference in our community. It was a time of reflection, not only on the dedication of the people, such as Bill Hatch, who worked diligently in getting this life saving organization started, and on the people who are still volunteering time today to help someone in dire need. We had an auction the night before, and met our goal that we had set financially. The next day, we got together with the community, and had a wonderful time of fellowship, delicious food, and a celebration of life for a special little fellow. The party ended with the drawing of the winning ticket for a handmade grill, which was won by James Brown.
Fifty years is quite an accomplishment for a volunteer organization. The amount of time dedicated to answering emergency calls is extremely demanding, but this is only part of the sacrifice a volunteer makes. Training is strenuous, and some of the stuff we see out there is horrifying, to say the least. And to top it off, it’s a strain on a volunteer’s budget, requiring gas, clothes, and other equipment, as well as the time away from family. Some people say that volunteerism is dying, and is quickly becoming a thing of the past. But I’m here to proclaim to you today that Volunteerism IS NOT DEAD at Latta Rescue. We are still providing this necessary service.
I would like to thank the many businesses and individuals who donated time, materials, food, and money to help make our 50th party a success, and who also came to our aid after Hurricane Matthew. I especially would like to thank The Dillon Herald for sponsoring our stuffed animal and blanket drive. These items are an important part of our mission, and it’s heartwarming to see all the items, you, our community, gave to help us care for the children and cold patients we care for. The celebration did not stop on May 20th. We will continue to do our very best to attend to your emergency needs, and give you and your loved ones the best care available. The volunteer spirit is alive and well in Latta. Each time we make a difference in your life will be cause for another celebration. Thank you for your prayers and support.
Sincerely,
Robbie McDaniel
