he Latta American Junior Legion baseball team defeated Wilson 8-1 in a game played in Latta on Monday, June 19.
After Hunter Jackson Sawyer settled down after hitting 2 of the first 3 batters he faced, #18 for Wilson hit a long 1 to right field to load the bases with only 1 out. Latta managed to get out of the jam by turning a double play while facing #11 who hit 1 up the middle.
Latta’s Russell Joel Rogers garnered a walk to begin the bottom of the first inning. Wesley Pierce Watson for Latta hit a long 1 to left for a double and a rbi. Wesley Pierce Watson for Latta managed to score on a passed ball, and Latta led 2-0 after the first inning.
Wilson’s #10 flew out to left to begin the top of the second inning. #17 hit 1 to center for a double, and the Wilson team found themselves in a good place only to have poor base running thwart a score as the runner on second was thrown out attempting to advance to third as #14 for Wilson hit a grounder to the shortshop. A good catch of a fly ball by the Latta centerfielder ended the threat.
Chandler Kulan Matthews garnered a walk to begin the inning for Latta. Latta’s Hunter Jackson Sawyer popped a fly into foul territory that was caught by Wilson’s first baseman for out 1. Robert Earl Anderson, III, for Latta hit 1 to left for a double, and runners were on second and third with only 1 out. Russell Joel Rogers for Latta foul tipped 1 for out 2. Chandler Kulan Matthews scored on a passed ball. Wesley Pierce Watson for Latta garnered a walk and quickly stole second. Austin McLeod Carmichael hit 1 to left for a single and 2 rbi. Wilson made a pitching change with #5. Latta’s Carmichael advanced to second on a passed ball. Latta’s John Malcolm George garnered a walk.
Kody Austin Anderson hit 1 to left center for a double and a rbi. After 2 innings of play Latta was up 6-0.
Wilson’s lone run was in the top of the third inning.
Latta added 2 more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Latta connected for 6 hits while holding Wilson to 4 hits.
Latta’s Tre Anderson was perfect at the plate with 2 hits in 2 at-bats while Kody Anderson and Pierce Watson were also perfect at the plate with 1 hit in 1 at-bat each. McLeod Carmichael connected for 2 hits in 4 at-bats.
Jacob Jerell connected for 1 hit in 2 at-bats for Wilson while Julian Marino, Toney Woods, and Keshawn Paul each garnered a hit in 3 at-bats.
Latta committed 2 errors while Wilson committed only 1.
Latta’s Hunter Sawyer started the game and pitched 3 innings and allowed 3 hits, 1 run, struck out 1, and walked no one. Peyton Benton pitched 4 innings and allowed 1 hit, struck out 4, and walked no one.
Jermonte Vanderhall pitched 6 innings for Wilson. He allowed 6 hits, 8 earned runs, walked 8, and struck out 4 in the loss.
Latta traveled to Pamplico on Wednesday, June 21.
Latta will host Dillon on Friday, June 23.
