By Sen. Kent Williams
At some point in our lives, we all have been admonished or taught to respect our elders.
And, this month, in particular, is a good time to heed that advice as we, as a nation, celebrate Older Americans Month.
“Older Americans are our Nation’s memory,” President Donald Trump stated in a proclamation declaring May as Older Americans Month. “We are blessed to have their presence, their love, and their unmatched perspective for our families.”
The theme for this year’s observance is “Age Out Loud” and “is intended to give aging a new voice,” according to federal Administration for Community Living (ACL).
“The 2017 theme gives us an opportunity to shine a light on many important issues and trends,” according to a release from ACL, which is within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“More than ever before, older Americans are working longer, trying new things, and engaging in their communities,” the release states. “They’re taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and advocating for themselves and others. They expect to continue to live their lives to the fullest, and they’re insisting on changes that make that possible.”
In the General Assembly, an effort is underway to help address the needs of South Carolina’s elderly population. A committee made up of senators, representatives and stakeholders met recently as they began to study the service, program and facility needs of our aging population.
At its initial meeting, the Joint Legislative Committee on Aging heard from Lt. Gov. Kevin Bryant who oversees the state’s Office on Aging. Darryl Broome, state director for the Lt. Governor’s Office on Aging, provided an update for the committee.
The Office on Aging anticipates the state’s elderly population will double by 2030. And, the Joint Legislative Committee on Aging can help the state prepare for any increased need for our older residents.
In his proclamation, the president also acknowledged the need to look out for the interests of elderly residents.
“Finally, during this month we also recognize that, as we age, many of us will need more assistance from our friends and family,” the president stated in the proclamation.
“We therefore recommit ourselves to ensuring that older Americans are not neglected or abused, receive the best healthcare available, live in suitable homes, have adequate income and economic opportunities, and enjoy freedom and independence in their golden years.”
To accomplish that would be a show of respect.
