After trailing 1-0 for 5 innings, the Dillon Wildcats came alive in the sixth inning to take a 5-1 victory in varsity baseball over Georgetown in a game played in Dillon on Tuesday, March 28.
Georgetown took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning and hung on to that until the Wildcats had a great sixth inning.
A combination of stranded runners and great defensive plays by Georgetown such as the one in the bottom of the third inning by the shortstop who chased a long foul ball beyond third base and made a great catch kept the Wildcats at bay.
The Wildcats’ Joh-Mitchell Carter connected for a single to first to get things going in the bottom of the sixth inning followed by Ladarius “Pee Wee” Wilson who bunted one to the pitcher and arrived safely at first. Dillon once again had base runners at first and second and were able to advance to second and third on a throw to second. Dillon knotted the score at 1 when Jon-Mitchell Carter scored.
Georgetown quickly replaced the pitcher with #16. With base runners on first and third, Billy “Rae Rae” McGirt for Dillon walked, and now the bases were loaded. Noah Carter hit a line drive to first for out 1. Ian Patterson bunted to first and Georgetown’s first baseman threw home and 2 runs scored to give Dillon the first lead of the game 3-1. Jackson Hayes went down swinging for the ‘Cats. Dillon’s winning pitcher, Andrew Rowell, hit 1 up the middle for a single and 2 rbi to give Dillon a 5-1 lead. Ty’Quan Rogers hit 1 between the shortstop and third for a single, and the base runners advance. Jon-Mitchell Carter bunted and arrived safely at first to load the bases. Pee Wee Wilson hit a grounder to second to end the inning with the bases loaded.
Neither team managed any scoring for the remainder of the game. The Dillon Wildcats committed 4 errors while Georgetown committed 1 in the game. Dillon managed 8 hits, and Georgetown connected for 5. John-Mitchell Carter was 3 for 4 at-the-plate while Ladarius Wilson connected for 1 hit in 3 at-bats. Davis cook connected for a rbi and a hit in 3 at-bats. Noah Carter garnered a hit in 2 at-bats while Andrew Rowell picked up 2 rbi and 1 hit in 3 at-bats.
Andrew Rowell pitched 6 innings, allowed 4 hits, a run that was earned, walked 2, and struck out 1 to pick up the win.
Dillon is 5-7 and 1-4 in Region 6-3A. The Dillon Wildcats will travel to Aynor on Friday, March 31, for a 6:00 p.m. game.
