The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) continues its pre-storm operations in advance of the winter weather predicted to move into the state on Friday, January 6, 2017.

SCDOT crews have prepped snow and ice removal equipment. All SCDOT facilities are stocked with salt, sand, brine and other de-icing materials. SCDOT crews in the Upstate have pre-treated interstates and major routes today (January 5) with a salt brine mixture.

SCDOT Maintenance units will begin working rotating 24-hour shifts on Friday, January 6. Crews will continue pre-treating operations until plowing operations become necessary. SCDOT’s State Highway Emergency Patrol (SHEP) will continue 24-hour per day operations during the storm.

Secretary of Transportation Christy A. Hall urges motorists to use caution when approaching SCDOT crews and equipment in pre-treating and plowing operations. Crews are working to keep the roads open and safe.

SCDOT further reminds drivers to use extreme caution on bridges which freeze over much faster than roadways.
