Team members were Avery Hatcher, Nathan McGirt, Josh Meekins, Kyle Bullock, and Ashton Adams. Nathan McGirt was the top scoring individual at the event, and Avery Hatcher was the 2nd highest individual score at the contest.
The Regional Land Judging CDE had 10 teams participating from across the Pee Dee Region. These team members are eligible for the State Land Judging CDE to be held in Sumter, S.C. on November 19, 2016.
The Land Judging Career Development Event requires students to identify soil characteristics such as texture, slope, erosion, permeability, and drainage. The students then have to use this information to place the soil in a capability class.
Teams also are given information as to what crop will be planted, what the soil pH is, and other pertinent information, Based on this information students will choose land treatments to help make the soil better for crops, forestry, wildlife, pastureland, or hayland.
These students are performing the tasks that a soil scientist, land use planner, farmer, and other soil specialists might use.
