Communities for Students of Dillon County (CFS) continues its commitment to education and needs for students of Dillon County by adopting the First Book literacy initiative. This year CFS partnered with Dillon District 3 and Dillon District 4 to support the Read to Succeed Act. Read to Succeed, or R2S, was enacted to make certain that all students in our state are able to comprehend grade-level text.
After consulting with educators in the two districts, it was determined that second grade students would benefit from the First Book initiative by presenting them with their first “chapter book.” This is the grade level when students begin reading books with chapters. By doing this, CFS hopes to help students create a culture of reading, improve interest in reading, increase reading at home, and increase children’s desire to learn which will result in greater academic performance.
CFS presented each second grade student in the public schools of Dillon County and also each second grade student at Dillon Christian School with a book from the Magic Tree House Series. Board members of CFS presented a total of 500 books with 25 different titles to these students.
