Several spoke about both men including Kathy Cassidy, who read a poem, and James Tart. A lifelong friend of Larry Lane said it was impossible to characterize Larry’s life. He said he was a very accomplished, wonderful, and loving person and a patriot who volunteered to serve his country when it was unpopular to do so.
Brenda Campbell, a member of the Dillon County Sheriff’s Office who helped organize the Neighborhood Watches, said that Larry was a person who did what he said he would do. She said that we have all been blessed because of Larry.
Sheriff Major Hulon had fond memories of both men being remembered. He said Laurie Allen was a good friend for many years. He said he got to know Larry Lane in 1973 through the Masons. Many years went by with no contact until the formation of the Neighborhood Watches. Hulon said he was impressed by the interest Larry took in the neighborhood watches. He said the Oak Grove Neighborhood Watch has taken steps by leaps and bounds and mean a great deal to the community and the county. He said he was proud of the Oak Grove Neighborhood Watch and said he wished every neighborhood watch would take lessons from Oak Grove.
Vonda Miller, the current president of the Neighborhood Watch, said both men being recognized, were dedicated to the Neighborhood Watch and made a difference. She said if you live in the Oak Grove area, the neighborhood watch needs you.
Jack Allen, father of Laurie Allen, expressed his gratitude.
Reggie McKinley, the new maintenance man at Latta Arms Apartments, spoke about the crime watch group he was starting called “Eyes On You.” He said he came to the event to learn more and said he hoped they would be hearing more from the new group.
After the speakers, a puppet show was presented by Puppets For Christ. Lunch was also enjoyed at the event.
