The Latta Vikings varsity baseball team defeated Hannah-Pamplico 8-7 in a game that was back-and-forth in Latta on Monday, April 25.
Hannah-Pamplico jumped off to an early lead scoring 2 runs in the top of the first inning. Latta quickly came back and tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the first inning. Latta again scored 3 runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead 5-2. Hannah-Pamplico did not give up and scored 2 runs in the top of the fourth. However, Latta managed to score 1 run in the bottom of the fourth and another run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. Hannah-Pamplico scored 2 runs in the top of the sixth and knotted the game in the top of the seventh inning at 7-7 to force an extra inning. Latta managed to score a run in the bottom of the eighth when Hannah-Pamplico committed one of the 3 errors in the game and Eric McGirt scored from third.
The Vikings managed 10 hits but committed 3 errors in the final regular season game before heading into the playoffs while Hannah-Pamplico garnered 9 hits.
Eric McGirt led the Latta Vikings with 4 hits in 5 at-bats including a triple, a double, 2 singles, 2 rbi, and a stolen base.
Dylan Brewer connected for a double and a single and a rbi in 3 trips to the plate, and Jackson Williams picked up 2 rbi on a single in 4 at-bats for Latta. The Vikings’ McLeod Carmichael garnered a single and a rbi in 3 at-bats. Jonathan Ray doubled and picked up a rbi in 4 trips to the plate for Latta while Colby Lee managed a single and scored a run in his 4 at-bats.
Dalton Lane scored a run, and Deonte Stanley scored 2 runs for Latta in the win.
Colby Lee picked up the win for the Vikings while pitching 2 innings. He allowed no hits, walked 2, struck out 2, and allowed 1 run. Six other pitchers saw action in the game for the Latta Vikings including McLeod Carmichael who pitched 2 innings and allowed 2 hits and struck out 2. Dylan Brewer, Eric McGirt, Caleb Mishue, Jackson Williams, and Dalton Lane each contributed in the victory for Latta.
Easton Tanner was tagged for the loss for Hannah-Pamplico. He pitched 1.2 innings and allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and allowed a run. Three other Hannah-Pamplico pitchers saw action. They were N. Owens, M. Hicks, and V. Cooper.
Easton Tanner led Hannah-Pamplico with 3 hits in 5 at-bats and picked up 2 rbi an scored a run in the loss. V. Cooper picked up 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate including a single, a double, and a rbi. C. Mays garnered 2 singles and a run in his 5 at-bats for Hannah-Pamplico. N. Owens score a run and a single in 3 trips to the plate. C. Gibbs also managed a single in his 3 at-bats. G. Book, M. Hicks, B. Meggs, B. Williamson, and N. Pilotte each scored a run in the loss. The Latta Vikings ended the regular season at 22-1.
Latta will host Scott’s Branch tonight (Thursday) in the Class A District VIII playoffs.
