Fourteen-year-old Dillon native Aubrey Goodwin will compete for the title of Miss South Carolina Teen this summer in Columbia. Goodwin attends Darlington High School and won the school’s pageant back in November 2014.
Her father Stanley is head of the math department at the school and her mother Suzie is a 4th grade teacher at Brockington Elementary Magnet School in Darlington and also serves as the Apple Foundations Trainer for the school district. Therefore Aubrey and her two sisters attend school in Darlington County.
Although it was always a dream to compete in a pageant, Goodwin never did a pageant until the high school pageant and the Miss South Carolina Teen pageant will be her first at the state level.
She is preparing for the state pageant by taking voice lessons, studying up on her current events, and staying physically fit by maintaining her diet and exercising. She has also been busy with wardrobe preparation and making appearances and speaking on her platform “Standing Up Against Cancer.”
Her platform stems from her losing her close friend to Leukemia and also her grandmother battle with stage 4 cancer.
“I am staying involved by speaking at different civic organizations in Darlington but my home town as well as giving the mission moments monthly at the county Relay For Life team meetings,” Goodwin said.
“I also have a Relay for Life team along with my church. We are striving to promote Cancer awareness through numerous activities and local events.”
Not only is she promoting her personal platform but she is also promoting the Miss America Scholarship Organization’s platform the Children’s Miracle Network.
Recently, she participated in IHOP restaurants National Pancake Day in Florence, which benefits the Children’s Miracle Network.
She was able to speak to the customers at the location about our local CMN hospital McLeod and she also raised money during her visit.
Aubrey has also read to several elementary classrooms in Darlington and also spoke to the Kiwanis Club and Pilot Club’s in Dillon. She attended the Miss South Carolina Pageant work weekend from February 26-28 where she met her competitors and also attend meetings where she learned all about the pageant.
Goodwin said her biggest dream is to one day become Miss America and credits God to being the biggest influence in her life because with him everything is possible.
She said she is looking forward to not only representing Darlington High School but the Dillon community at the state pageant.
“I’m really looking forward to making life-long friendships, Goodwin said.
“It’s an honor to be able to do that while representing my school and my hometown.”
