The Dillon Wildcats varsity basketball team defeated Bishop England 67 to 55 Saturday, Feb. 20, to advance in Class 2A lower state semifinals at 7 p.m. Wednesday when they host Lee Central.
Bishop England controlled the opening tip off, and Bishop England’s #12 scored the first 2 points to take the lead before Dillon’s #43 Ja’Quan Knowlin hit a 2-pointer on the other end and was fouled; he connected on the free throw to give Dillon a 3 to 2 lead.
The ‘Cats Knowlin blocked Bishop England’s #32 Brendan McHale’s  shot. Knowlin took a shot on the other end that was rebounded by Javier Brookins who laid it in for 2.
Bishop England’s #2 hit a basket for 2 points to close the gap to a 1-point lead for Dillon before Dillon’s #2 Keenan Norman connected on two 2-pointers in a row.
Bishop England’s #32 Brendan McHale hit one for 2.  Brookins connected for another 2 points.  The game was close as Bishop England’s $32 McHale continued to score for his team. However, Dillon’s Norman was also having a good night on the offensive boards. Brooks and McHale each scored 28 points in the game.
At the end of the first quarter the score was knotted at 15.
Bishop England’s McHale connected on the first basket of the second quarter to give his team a 2-point lead only to have Dillon’s Knowlin grab a rebound on the offensive end and score 2 to tie the game.
Dillon appeared to have the advantage and began to pull away.  However, the Bishop England team kept fighting and kept the game close.  With 3:09 remaining in the second quarter Dillon was up by 3 points.
Bishop England managed to tie the game at 29 but at halftime Dillon was in the lead 33 to 31.
Dillon managed an 11-point lead early in the third quarter. Bishop England fought back and closed the gap to 6 points before the end of the third quarter. However, as the buzzer sounded to end the third quarter Dillon was up 8 points.
In the fourth quarter Dillon pulled away and had a 17-point lead before Bishop England closed the gap to 12 points as the fourth quarter ended.  Dillon won 67 to 55.
Keenan Norman pumped in 28 points, 2 offensive and 1 defensive rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 assist in the victory for Dillon. Dillon’s Ja’Quan Knowlin added 16 points and grabbed 11 offensive and 5 defensive  rebounds for the Wildcats while Khary White added 5 points, 2 offensive and 2 defensive rebounds, 1 steal, 3 deflections and 1 assist. Javier Brookins scored 4 points, 1 steal, and 2 assists for the ‘Cats. Rakeem Fletcher scored 4 points, 1 offensive and 1 defensive rebound,  and 2 assists. Raheem McClam scored 5 points, 2 offensive rebounds, 1 blocked shot, 1 steal, and 1 assist. Corrian Wright added 3 points, 1 defensive rebound, 1 steal, and 1 blocked shot. Jallian Williams had 2 points and 2 deflections in the win. Darius Bethea contributed 1 defensive rebound and and 1 assist for the ‘Cats.
Bishop England’s Mark Bosco added 11 points  while Lane had 7, Washington 6, and Owens 3.
