A car was spotted in the river at Harllee’s Bridge on Thursday afternoon. A bystander said he spotted the car in the river and saw the end which was aquamarine in color.
The Dillon County Sheriff’s Office, the S.C. Highway Patrol, Dillon Rescue Squad, Dillon County EMS, S.C. DNR, Dillon County Fire Station One, and Dillon County Fire Station Five were on the scene.
The vehicle was located, the interior was checked, and there were no signs of anyone inside the vehicle. Law enforcement and emergency workers returned to the scene on Thursday night working well into Friday morning. A body was discovered at that time.
Coroner Donnie Grimsley identifies the man as Jamal Tyree Smith, a 30-year-old black male, of Rowland, North Carolina. An autopsy was being performed early Friday evening, and the cause of death is under investigation, Grimsley said.
Hills Memorial Chapel of Rowland, NC, is in charge of arrangements.
