Local players continued to come up big for Post 1 this weekend as Florence earned a 5-2 win over Georgetown on Friday before helping Coach Derrick Urquhart win his 300th victory on Sunday in the North-Carolina-South Carolina American Legion Challenge.

Friday’s game against Georgetown was called due to rain and lightning in the bottom of the fifth inning with one out with Post 1 ahead 5-3.

Post 1’s Ke’Shaun Samuel singled in the bottom of the first with two outs and Latta’s Jackson Williams followed with a double to score him for a 1-0 lead. Cal Butler singled to pick up a runner in the second for a 2-0 lead, and Williams led off the third with a solo home run for a 3-1 lead. Florence then loaded the bases and scored two runs with walks for a 5-1 lead. A two-run single from Tyler McAllister allowed Georgetown to close the gap to 5-3, but the rain and lightning ended the game shortly after.

William Goodwin earned the win for Florence Post 1, giving up two hits, two walks, and two earned runs, striking out three.

Butler had two hits, and Dillon’s Patrick Herring also added two hits for Post 1.

On Saturday, Florence earned a win over Hendersonville in the NC-SC American Legion challenge. Florence scored two runs each in the first three innings to take the lead, with Samuel getting two hits with one RBI and Steven Calcutt picking up one RBI.

Lake View’s Carson Rogers got the win on the mound, pitching five innings for two hits, one unearned run, one walk, and two outs.

On Sunday, Post 1 picked up a 4-3 win over Shelby in eight innings. In the bottom of the eighth with the score tied 3-3, Butler singled and advanced to second on a bunt from Grayson Cottingham. Calcutt singled to load the bases, and Herring drew a walk to give Florence the walk-off win.

Cottingham and Butler each had three hits and Lindsey Robinson picked up two RBI for Post 1.

Lake View’s Josh Price earned the win on the mound in relief, pitching 1.2 innings with one out and no hits to seal the win.

On Sunday afternoon, Florence defeated Hickory 7-3 to secure Urquhart’s 300th victory in 12 years as coach for Post 1. Florence scored three runs in the first and three in the fifth to claim the win.

Samuel went 4-for-4 with three runs and also earned the win on the mound, pitching six innings for seven hits, two earned runs, two walks, and five outs. Cottingham went 2-for-2 with three RBI, and Williams and Patrick Lovelace had two hits each in the win.

Post 1 will be back in regular season action on Wednesday night in Florence when they are scheduled to host Potomac Valley at 7:30 p.m.
