Latta’s Lady Vikings clinched the Region 8-A title this week with wins over Carvers Bay and Creek Bridge.
On Monday, the Vikings traveled to Carvers Bay for a 20-0 win over the Lady Bears, giving up just two hits in the win.
Latta picked up four runs in the top of the first inning with four singles and a double from Macy Hyatt. Hyatt hit another double in the second along with Madison Owens, and Kyra Grant and Dori Webster both singled with Kaleigh Caulder reaching on a walk to put the Lady Vikings up 8-0. Latta picked up seven runs in the third with four singles, two doubles, and two walks. Caulder doubled in the fourth and the Vikings had four more hits and a walk for four more runs for a 19-0 lead. The Vikings capped the win with a single in the fifth.
Dori Webster earned the win on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing just two hits while striking out four. For Carvers Bay, Meg Dennis pitched three innings for 10 hits, six runs, six earned runs, one walk, and one out, and A. McLean pitched two innings for 13 hits, 14 runs, 14 earned runs, three walks, and two outs.
At bat for the Vikings, Kyra Grant went 5-for-5 with a double, four RBI, a stolen base, and four runs scored; Macy Hyatt went 4-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI, and one run; Dori Webster went 3-for-4 with seven RBI; Kaleigh Caulder went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI, a stolen base, and three runs; Madison Owens went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI, and two runs; Maddy Long went 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run; Camryn Sawyer went 2-for-4 with three runs scored; Genesis Anderson and Kurstin Hopkins each went 1-for-3 with one run scored; D’Anna Tanner went 1-for-1 with one stolen base; Brooke Carter scored three runs; and Casey Prescott scored one run and reached on a walk.
For the Bears, B. Williams and D. Poston each went 1-for-2.
On Tuesday, the Vikings hosted Creek Bridge for a double header, earning a 14-0 win in game one.
Latta’s Dori Webster and Casey Prescott combined for a no-hitter with Webster striking out two in one inning and Prescott striking out four in two innings. Shakeerah Sumpter took the loss for Creek Bridge, pitching two innings for 13 hits, 14 runs, 13 earned runs, and four walks.
At bat for Latta, Camryn Sawyer went 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, a stolen base, three RBI, and three runs scored; Kyra Grant went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI; Maddy Long went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored; Kaleigh Caulder went 2-for-2 with two RBI, two stolen bases, and two runs; Casey Prescott went 2-for-2 with a double, one RBI, and two runs; Kurstin Hopkins went 1-for-1 with a double, one RBI, one stolen base, and two runs; Macy Hyatt went 1-for-2 and also reached on a walk; Genesis Anderson scored one run and drew two walks; and D’Anna Tanner and Brooke Carter each scored one run with one stolen base.
In game two, Latta earned a 12-0 win, scoring one run in the top of the first and 11 in the top of the third behind 12 hits.
Kurstin Hopkins and Arica Gandy combined for another no-hitter, with Hopkins striking out four with one hit by pitch in two innings and Gandy striking out three in one inning.
For the Warriors, Jahresha Mckelvy gave up three hits, three runs, two earned runs, and three walks in two innings, and Shakeerah Sumpter allowed nine hits, nine runs, six earned runs, and one home run in one inning.
At bat for Latta, Kaleigh Caulder went 2-for-3 with a grand slam home run, four RBI, a stolen base, and two runs scored; Genesis Anderson went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, and two runs; Brooke Carter went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and one run; Dori Webster went 2-for-3 with one run and one stolen base; Maddy Long went 2-for-3 with one run, also reaching on an error; Casey Prescott went 1-for-1 with one hit by pitch, one walk, one RBI, and one run; Kurstin Hopkins went 1-for-2 with one run and one walk; Kyra Grant scored two runs with two stolen bases, reaching on a walk and an error; and D’Anna Tanner scored one run with one RBI, reaching on an error.
Latta improved to 21-4 overall and 8-0 to clinch the Region 8-A title.
The Vikings are scheduled to travel to Lamar tonight at 6:00 p.m. and will be on the road at Dillon on Monday, April 27 at 5:30 p.m. The Class A district playoffs are set to begin on Thursday, April 30.
