Dillon – Carolyn Bethea Cottingham, 90, died at her home surrounded by her family and faithful neighbors in Dillon S.C. on Sunday, December 14, 2014. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Main Street United Methodist Church, 401 East Main Street in Dillon, S.C. at 2:00 P.M. The family will receive friends between 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. in Asbury Hall at the church prior to the service. Reverends Bruce Sayre and Earl Ogburn will officiate. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Kannaday Funeral Home in Dillon is assisting the family.
Mrs. Cottingham was born April 20, 1924, on Easter Sunday in Tatum, SC, a daughter of the late George James and Blanche Stanton Bethea, She was a graduate of Lander College. She taught school in Dillon County for over 30 years. Prior to teaching in Dillon, she taught in Summerville, S.C. She had a lifetime of being active in both the Dillon and Marlboro County farming communities.
Mrs. Cottingham had been a faithful member of Main Street United Methodist Church for 65 years where she was a Sunday School teacher in the children’s ministry for many years and was a member of Wightman-Cottingham Circle. She served various leadership roles in the United Methodist Women (UMW) and the Etudier Club. She was a trustee and vice-president of The Tatum Cemetery Association. Mrs. Cottingham was a past member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Junior Charity League, and was a charter member of the Glove and Trowel Garden Club. Perhaps her greatest achievement is the legacy she leaves through her three children that circumstances required her to raise as a single parent.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James McCutchen Cottingham, who was born in Dillon. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Lanier and Gene Hamer, as well as a brother, George Bethea. Survivors include her son, James Cottingham,Jr. (Cindy); daughters Margaret Moody (Mac) and Georgia (B.) Park (Christopher); ten grandchildren, Jamie Moody, Dana Ogburn (Earl), Meg Crumpler (Jason), Ashley Ford (Matt), Chris Park (Kelly), Ginger Park, Jay Park, Clay Cottingham, Carly Cottingham, and James Cottingham, III; six great grandchildren, Mason Moody, Hudson Ford, Elsie Ford, Price Park, Whit Crumpler, and Finley Park; a sister, Dorothy Holman of Blakely, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
