Despite the threat of stormy weather, the 6th Annual Dillon County Shrimp-casting Contest was held on Sunday afternoon, September 7, at Kathi and Brownie Campbell’s pool.
Because of inclement weather it was touch and go as to whether the contest would take place. Host Brownie Campbell made the final decision based upon the philosophy of Caster Richard Calhoun, “You have to be optimistic.” Campbell remained optimistic and the contest went forward.
As in past contests, the contestants were given three throws in each division: three foot, seven foot, and eight foot nets. Throws were judged on shape of net and how well the net covered the bait.
The eight foot net competition was won by veteran caster Mickey Dew. This was Mickey’s second victory—having won the inaugural contest in 2008. Daniel Coleman came in second place, and third place went to Richard Calhoun.
The seven foot net competition was won by Daniel Coleman who threw three perfect or almost perfect nets. Bill Aston was the second place finisher, and Mickey Dew came in third.
The three foot net division was won by a jubilant Harold Kornblut with second place going to Bill Aston and third place to Mickey Dew.
It seemed that this year’s contestants were much more vocal, with a certain amount of “trash talking” taking place before, during, and after the event. We will attribute that to the weather.
As in the past, the judges, Kathi Campbell, Jerry Richardson, and Gene Varn did an excellent job despite having the various competitors hanging over their shoulders.
The meal, Frogmore Stew, was provided by Richard Calhoun, Bill Aston, Jerry Richardson, and Kathi and Brownie Campbell with dessert again provided by Doris Pelt and Jimmy Fore. This excellent summer seafood recipe was cooked by Tracy Pelt.
As in the past, a good time was had by all. Next year’s competition will take place the last Sunday in August. If you are interested in coming, contact Brownie Campbell.
