The Latta Vikings hosted the Marion Swamp Foxes for a scrimmage football game on Tuesday night.
Latta showed off their defense capabilities and Colby Lee found the end zone on offense, though no official score was kept in the scrimmage. The game ended early due to lightning.
Latta hopes to improve on the progress they made last year, when they finished with a 7-4 record and a 4-1 record in Region 8-A. The Vikings have been steadily improving under Coach Kelly Williamson, now in his fourth year with Latta. Last year Latta reached the playoffs for the first time since 2003.
This year’s team saw 16 returning players with several rising players from the successful junior varsity program.
Latta’s scrimmage against South Robeson on Monday was rained out, but the Vikings are scheduled to play in the Chesterfield Jamboree on August 15 and in the Hemingway Jamboree on August 22.
Latta will open the regular season at home against Mullins on August 29 and will begin region play on October 3 against Hemingway. Hemingway is new to the region this year, along with Carver’s Bay.
