Former Wildcat Jamie Callahan is working to overcome a slump in the minors as the Greenville Drive enters the second half of the 2014 season.
The 19-year-old, right-handed Callahan started the season strong, earning a 10-inning, 7-6 win over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Thursday, April 10, and tying the franchise single-game record with 11 strikeouts in five innings.
But since then, Callahan has only picked up one other win on the mound while wracking up seven losses in 14 starts.
His lowest point so far this season came on May 16 against Savannah, where he gave up nine hits, nine earned runs, and four walks in 3.2 innings for an ERA of 22.09. Callahan has shown some improvement since then, but in his most recent start on Tuesday against Asheville, he gave up seven hits, five earned runs, and three walks in five innings, striking out just one for the loss.
Callahan’s only other win came on Sunday, May 4 ,when the Drive defeated Augusta 12-2. Callahan pitched five innings for five outs, six hits, and two earned runs in that game.
So far this season, Callahan has a 6.79 ERA, allowing 87 hits, 54 runs, 48 earned runs, four home runs, and 30 walks. He has struck out 56 across 63.2 innings.
With the second half of the season just getting underway, Callahan still has time to improve. The Drive will play nearly every day throughout July and August, with road games against Asheville tonight and Hickory this weekend.
The Greenville Drive is 37-38 overall with a 3-3 record so far in the second half of the season.
