Dillon’s Duncan Callahan has verbally committed to play for the University of South Carolina after graduation.
USC assistant coach Sammy Esposito made an offer to the Dillon sophomore after last Wednesday’s win over Loris and Callahan made the verbal commitment on Thursday.
Callahan said he has always wanted to play for the Gamecocks and was eager to jump at the opportunity.
The right-hander was out for much of this season after fracturing his elbow but returned to action this month and hit as high as 92 mph in Wednesday’s win. He was 2-0 in his first three appearances this season with a .64 ERA, facing 39 batters in 11 innings and striking out 22 while allowing just one run, three hits, and three walks.
Callahan’s brother, Jamie, was also committed to USC before being drafted by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2012 MLB draft. Jamie Callahan is currently playing for the Greenville Drive, a Red Sox affiliate, with a 1-2 record in five appearances.
