From February 3 to February 28, 2014, Pennies for Patients teaches students caring, sharing, respect for others, and the value of community service, in addition to supporting an important cause. The need for cures is critical: nearly 895,000 Americans are battling blood cancers, and leukemia remains the leading cause of disease-related death among children under twenty.
“Our students’ involvement with The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society teaches them that they can make an important difference in the lives of others,” stated LVHS senior Amber Locklear, who co-chaired this year’s campaign with classmates, Kayce Wong and Morgan Herlong.
Each year, the first period class collecting the most change receives a pizza party. This year, Coach Glenn Edge’s students claimed that honor by collecting $534.54 during the three week time period. Second place honors went to Ms. Jessica Handy’s class with $529.44, while Mrs. Honey Edge’s students claimed third place with $489.66, Mr. Brooks Garris claimed fourth with $429.69, and Mrs. Carol Rogers took fifth with $269.10. Collectively, Lake View High School contributed an all-time school high of $2761.93 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society from this year’s campaign.
“The support of Lake View High School students positively impacts our ability to find cures for blood cancers and provide patients and their families with support and information,” said Amy Harmon, Campaign Director of the South Carolina Chapter.
