Latta’s Lady Vikings earned wins over Johnsonville and Creek Bridge this week in girls varsity basketball action.
The Lady Vikings traveled to Johnsonville on Monday to makeup last week’s missed game against the Flashes and took a 25-10 lead in the first quarter. The Vikings outpaced the Flashes 14-4 in the second for a 39-14 halftime lead, and held off Johnsonville 18-15 in the third and 17-13 in the fourth to seal the 74-42 win.
TaKeria Legette led Latta with a game-high 35 points, including six three-pointers, with 16 assists, nine steals, and 11 rebounds. Jessica Evans added 25 points in the win with six steals and two rebounds, and Brittany Burgess earned 10 with six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Maya Wright added two points and picked up 17 rebounds with four steals and two blocks, and Margaret Desser add two points and made one steal for the Vikings.
Crystal Williams led the Lady Flashes with a team-high 17 points and Cayla Gunter added 10. Annsley Mace scored eight and Jaynea Eaddy earned three, with Tiffany Smalls and Kayla Ard each earning two.
On Tuesday, Latta traveled to Creek Bridge for an 82-39 win over the Warriors.
The Lady Vikings took a 19-6 lead in the first quarter and went 21-15 and 23-12 in the second and third to lead 63-33. Latta wrapped up the win with a 19-6 fourth quarter.
TaKeria Legette again led the Vikings with a game-high 33 points, including eight three-pointers, 13 rebounds, 11 assists, 11 steals, and one block. Jessica Evans added 24 points, including three three-point goals, with six steals and four rebounds; Mallory Townsend scored eight points with 10 rebounds, two steals, and an assist; Brittany Burgess earned six points with 11 assists, eight rebounds, four steals, and two blocks; Iyonna McKenzie added four points with two steals and a defensive rebound; and Tyjhane Faison added three points with one offensive rebound. Iryanna Keene contributed two points in the win and Maya Wright added two points with 13 rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Shayla Graves scored 16 points to lead Creek Bridge, with Brittany Brockett adding nine in the effort. Whitney Green and Rion Griffith each added six, and Brittany Nichols scored two for the Lady Warriors.
Latta improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in Region 8-A, while Johnsonville slipped to 6-9 and 3-2. Hannah-Pamplico leads the region with an 8-6 record and an undefeated 6-0 record in Region 8-A.
No Region 8-A teams were ranked in the latest South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association’s Class A girls poll. Timmonsville was ranked first in the state, followed by Whale Branch, Carvers Bay, Hemingway, and Cross. Baptist Hill, Ridge-Spring Monetta, Denmark-Olar, Wagener-Salley, and St. Joseph’s rounded out the top 10.
The Lady Vikings will be at Hannah-Pamplico on Friday night to face the Raiders. Next week, Latta will be at home to wrap up the regular season, starting with a makeup game against Green Sea-Floyds on Monday, Johnsonville on Tuesday, and Lake View on Thursday.
