Former Wildcat Jamie Callahan made history for the Lowell Spinners this week as the first pitcher to be named New York-Penn League Pitcher of the Week for two weeks in a row.

Although he didn’t get off to the best start this season, Callahan has been improving.

He earned his first Pitcher of the Week honors with a July 26 win over Connecticut, when he knocked down the first 15 batters, allowing only one hit in the sixth inning. Callahan was the first Lowell pitcher to earn the honor since the first weeks of the 2012 season.

Callahan followed up that performance with a win over Auburn on July 31. He pitched six flawless innings, striking out nine with no hits, no walks, and no runs.

In his most recent outing on Tuesday, August 6, Callahan pitched 4.2 innings and faced 20 batters for five hits, three earned runs, two walks, and one out. But the Spinners still took a 4-3 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers with Lowell’s Daniel McGrath pitching 2.1 innings with no hits and four outs and Brayan Villarreal and Joe Gunkel each covering a flawless inning.

So far this season, Callahan has a 3-1 record on the mound with 30 hits, three homers, and 17 earned runs in 38.1 innings for an ERA of 3.99. Callahan has struck out 33 and walked 11 in eight starts.

Lowell is 27-20 so far this season, which is scheduled to run through Wednesday, September 4.
