Thirty-six Dillon Middle School students met in the school’s media center on Tuesday, April 30, for lunch and a discussion of the book The Running Dream by Wendelin van Draanen, which they had all read. Lunch was provided by Mr. Travis Jackson, representing one of the school’s business partners.  DMS Media Specialist Marcia Bethea facilitated the book discussion. The April Lunch Bunch students gave The Running Dream 33 thumbs ups. This book, a work of realistic fiction, is about Jessica, a high school girl who is a star runner on her school’s track team.  An automobile accident caused her to lose a portion of a leg and foot.  The book deals with Jessica’s struggle to not only walk again, but to run as well.  Many students described the book as “inspiring.”  The Running Dream has been nominated for next year’s South Carolina Junior Book Award.
