Eight Viking athletes qualified for the State Championship track meet at the Lower State track qualifier on Saturday, May 4, at Whale Branch.
In the boys meet, Jeremiah Hayes was the only Viking to qualify. Hayes finished second in the 3200 Meter Run and ninth in the 1600 Meter Run.
Latta’s Anthony McCall finished tenth in the 800 Meter Run, but did not qualify for the state meet, and Sam Sellers finished eighth in the 3200 Meter Run. The team of Hayes, McCall, Sellers, Davon Davis, Nick Fincannon, and Jerodi Hill also finished ninth in the 4×800 Meter Relay.
In the girls, Iyona McKenzie, Kierra Johnson, Jessica Evans, Brittany Burgess, Alexia McLeod, Katie Williams, and Zi’Donia Page all qualified.
McKenzie finished second in both the 100 and 200 Meter Dash events and Evans finished third in the 200 Meter Dash. Burgess tied for sixth in the 100 Meter Dash, and Evans finished 13.
Johnson finished third in the 100 Meter Hurdles, and the team of Evans, Burgess, McKenzie, Johnson, McLeod, and Page, finished first in the 4×100 Meter Relay and second in the 4×400. Burgess and Johnson also finished second and third in the High Jump. Katie Williams also finished seventh in the 800 Meter Run, and Alexia McLeod finished ninth in the 400 Meter Dash.
The State meet will be held this weekend, May 10 and 11.
