Dillon’s Lady Wildcats took second place in Region 8-2A girls’ basketball on Friday nigh with a 66-44 loss to Mullins in a tiebreaking game for the region championship.

Dillon earned a 58-21 win over Waccamaw at home on Wednesday night to send them to the tiebreaking game. The Lady Wildcats took a 17-3 lead over the Warriors in the first quarter and outscored them 14-4, 13-5, and 14-9 to claim the win.

Tyshanna Lester led Dillon with a game-high 21 points and Yolanda Campbell added 10 points with nine rebounds, with Khamele Manning and Shar’asia Samuel each adding seven points. Brianna Lee scored five and Lakedra Page earned three, and Cali McRae, Dakerhia Samuel and Shymya Sowells each contributed two points in the win.

Mary Tyler and Jaynae Rice led Waccamaw with eight points each.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Mullins defeated Marion 56-28 to keep them tied 9-1 with the Lady Wildcats in the region, forcing the tiebreaker game. Cassie Phillips and Brittani McDonald each scored 14 points in the game to lead Mullins.

On Friday, the Lady Wildcats and Lady Auctioneers both traveled to Loris for the region tiebreaker. Mullins took a 17-6 lead in the first quarter and outscored Dillon 12-10 in the second to lead 29-16 at the half. The Lady Aucs kept up the pressure with a 19-16 third and sealed the win by outscoring the Wildcats 18-12 in the fourth.

Region 8-2A Co-Player of the Year Tyshanna Lester led Dillon with nine points and Brianna Lee, Khamele Manning, and Yolanda Campbell each added eight points for the Lady Wildcats. Shar’Asia Samuel scored six and Dakerhia Samuels earned three as the Wildcats took second place in the region.

Cassie Phillips led Mullins with 15 points; Brittani McDonald scored 14 points with eight steals; and Region 8-2A Co-Player of the Year Jaleah Lesane scored 13 points with eight assists. Niesha Godfrey earned nine points, Brianna Brantley scored six, and Zaakariah Williams added five, with JaQuiesha Wright earning four.

Dillon’s record improved to 16-8 overall and 9-2 in Region 8-2A while Mullins improved to 19-3 overall and 10-1 in the region.

Tonight, Dillon kicks off the 2013 Class 2A Lower State tournament as they host Region 7-2A’s third place Lake Marion at 7:00 p.m. Make plans to attend to support our local team!

The winner of the game will move on to face either Waccamaw or Region 7-2A’s first place Lake City on Friday, February 15.
