Dr. Vera McBryde died in Chicago, IL on May 8, 2012 after an extended illness. She was born in Latta, SC to the late Rev. Robert and Mrs. Nora McBryde; and predeceased also by three of her four siblings; sister, Jamie McGill , brothers, Robert, Jr. and Alex McBryde. She is survived by her two sons, Alan (Irene) and Vernon Hester of Chicago, grandson Mark Hester; sister, Cassandra Jordan, Pittsford, NY, nephews: James (Lou Ellen) McGill, Fleming Island, FL, Isaac Jordan, Jr. Fairport, NY; nieces: Levira Williams, Dillon SC, Denise Ham, Darlington, SC, Doris McBryde, Alexandria, VA, Renee Cox, Wilmington, NC, Cassandra (Payton) Maxwell, Greensboro, NC.  and sisters-in-law: Katheleen McBryde, Latta, SC, Mozelle Armstrong, Barnwell, SC, Jarusha Hester, Chicago, IL , cousins and friends. Dr. McBryde was a graduate of Fisk University and Meharry Medical College, the latter from which she received her medical degree. Upon completion of her studies, internship
and residency, she entered private practice for several years in Nashville before moving to Chicago.  It was there that she practiced in a number of clinical settings while engaging in research and teaching at the University of Chicago.  She later returned to her home state of South Carolina and spent several years in her own private practice in Columbia until she became ill. She then returned to Chicago to be near her sons.
A private family celebration of her life and honoring her memory was held in Chicago.
