This past summer, hundreds of young scholars in grades 4-6 were invited to attend an intense educational program on topics involving medicine, engineering and forensic science in a college atmosphere.
India Lockemy, a rising 5th grader at Gordon Elementary, was one of those students invited by the National Young Scholars Program (NYSP) to spend a week on campus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
NYSP is an exciting and interactive program that unleashes the learning potential within the nation’s most promising young students.
India was nominated by her 4th Grade teacher, Cassie Rust, as a candidate for the program. After her acceptance, India chose to focus on the study of medicine during the week-long residential program with an emphasis on the nervous system.
In addition to other scientific activities, she dissected a cow’s heart for close study. At the conclusion of the program she was chosen to make a presentation on the nervous system and soft tissues of the human body.
Asked to comment on her experience, the Dillon young scholar, stated, “It was an awesome experience that furthers my interest in science and the make-up of the human body. I was also very impressed with the scholarly level of the program and the abilities of the students that attended. I really appreciate Ms. Rust for nominating me and giving me the chance to be a National Young Scholar. Every day I learned something new. I am sure that during my 5th grade year at Gordon, my interest in science will continue to grow.”
India is the daughter and step-daughter of William and Sandie Lockemy and the granddaughter of Judge James Lockemy and Ellen Bullard of Dillon.
Her mother Brandy McKervey and husband Keith live in Florence.
All of her family is extremely proud of India’s accomplishment and scholarship.
