When one thinks of Family Court, the first thing that may come to mind is a divorce or child custody, but one of the most important issues that the Family Court handles is truancy.
Truancy is a big deal. We can’t let children skip out on their education. It’s something that affects their entire future. It’s a problem that our county school board has been discussing for quite a while, but they seemed to feel that the issue was getting the attention it deserved.
Recently elected Judge Salley Huggins-McIntyre has seen the importance of the issue and has taken steps to make it a priority. She has held meetings with school officials and other agencies that deal with trying to get all children back on track and in school.
When students and their parents get the message that truancy won’t be tolerated, perhaps attending classes will be their top priority.
Kudos to Judge Huggins-McIntyre for bringing attention to and trying to get a handle on this problem in our county.
