Maj. Robert McLaurin Horton, US Army Retired, 66, died Tuesday, January 10 at home.
Born in Anderson, SC on May 26, 1945, he was the son of the late Maxie McLaurin Horton and Edward Vandiver Horton of Dillon. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
He was a 1963 graduate of Dillon High School, attending Clemson University and USC-Florence, before graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia in June, 1968.
He was honored with the Meritorious Service Medal for his service in the United States Army from February 1969 to February 1989, serving in staff and leader assignments, as an artillery officer. In his terminal assignment, he was the Mobilization Officer for the 81st Army Reserve Command.
During his military career, e was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC and Fort Sill, OK. He graduated from German Language School in Monterey, CA. He served his country overseas in South Korea, West Germany, Italy and Panama.
After retirement, he lived in Garden City, SC, before returning home to Dillon in 2003.
He is survived by his brothers, Dr. Edward Vandiver “Van” Horton, Jr. (Elaine) of Myrtle Beach, SC, Mr. Braddy McLaurin “Brad” Horton of Dillon, a very special first cousin Elixabeth McLaurin “Betty” Bethea Daly (Ed) of Dillon, and numerous other cousins.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January14 at 2 p.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church, with visitation at 1-2 p.m. and immediately following the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church or a charity of one’s choice.
