At recent Dillon City Council meeting, a change in the zoning to allow for a free medical clinic at 310 East Washington Street was widely discussed, and the first reading ultimately passed.
There was discussion that misinformation was circulating about the clinic. So, what is the free medical clinic, and who will it serve?
The Dillon County Free Medical Clinic is a faith-based organization that will provide complete, confidential routine medical care to the county’s working uninsured poor between the ages of 19-64, according to Leslie Grubb, executive director.
Ernest Barrentine, chairman of the Dillon County Free Clinic Board, said that the clinic will typically serve the uninsured “who have jobs but cannot afford health insurance, their employers do not provide health insurance, or they make to much to qualify for Medicaid.”
“It is our sincere intention to assist our neighbors who are making a sincere effort to help themselves and their families,” said Barrentine. “Our mission is to promote the physical, emotional and spiritual health of those who need our care.”
The clinic will be by appointment only and will be open two evenings a week. Emergency care will be referred to the hospital, and walk-ins will not be allowed.
Local volunteers—doctors, nurses, etc. from Dillon County and the surrounding area—will provide quality care and skilled service to those who need it.
“It’s care with dignity,” said Grubb. “Not secondary care, “ she explained.
Barrentine said that the clinic will be in compliance with all state and federal regulations. While some pharmaceutical support will be provided, there will not be access to narcotics, and this will be posted.
Grubb said that volunteer applications may be picked up at the Dillon County Chamber of Commerce. Donations of supplies, such as household items, furniture items, and decorative items may be dropped off at the Dillon County Chamber of Commerce. Monetary donations may be made to Dillon County Free Medical Clinic, P.O. Box 109, Dillon, SC 29536.
