The South Carolina High School League’s executive committee has voted 13-2 to approve a proposed split in the Class 2A football division to create two state championship games. The decision comes after a 33-15 vote in favor of the approval from Class 2A athletic directors in late March.

Under the original proposal, Class 2A would be split into Division I and II, with Dillon in Division I. Central, Dillon’s opponent in the last three Class 2A championship games, would move to Division II, meaning there will be no fourth round for the two teams. However, SCHSL Commissioner Jerome Singleton said that the league had not officially begun breaking down the divisions for the coming season.

The split will mean that both Class 2A championship games will now be played at Benedict on Friday, December 2, with the first game beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Class A championship games will be held at Benedict a week earlier, and Class 3A and the two Class 4A championship games will be held at Clemson on Saturday, December 3.

The split also means that every Class 2A school will make post-season playoffs, with the top four schools in each Division receiving a first round bye.
