Sara Khalil, daughter of Nabil and Mona Khalil of Dillon, has been accepted to both the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, SC. She is presently a senior at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC.
Khalil developed her interest in science at a young age and found the complexities of the human body intriguing. Throughout her high school career and volunteer work, she discovered her passion for helping other people maintain a healthy life.
“Over the years as the technology in the medical field has expanded, my interests increased as I learned that these advances can aid many in need of medical attention,” Khalil said.
Khalil’s medical experiences include interning at Dillon Family Medicine, Hospital Republica Del Ecuador, and Spartanburg Regional Hospital. She considers these internships as her greatest learning experiences because they allowed her to interact with healthcare professionals, patients, and medical equipment. She was allowed to observe different doctor-patient relationships, provide comfort to patients, and learn about rare medical cases. “It was very beneficial to apply textbook knowledge to real situations, and the internships promoted problem solving skills and treating each patient uniquely,” Khalil said.
Khalil remains an active student on the Wofford campus by being President of the Beta Beta Beta National Biology Honor Society, Vice-President of the Alpha Epsilon Delta National Pre-Health Honor Society, and a Red Cross volunteer.
“(These activities) have given me numerous ways to prepare entering the medical field by allowing me to volunteer time to assist in the health of others,” Khalil said.
While Khalil feels excited about being accepted to both medical schools in South Carolina, she also feels the large responsibilities that go along with the privilege. After much consideration, Khalil has decided to attend the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
“I was very glad to learn that my work, experiences, and efforts had prepared me enough to reach this point,” Khalil said.
Khalil is a graduate of South Carolina’s Governor School for Science and Mathematics and will graduate from Wofford College in May with a Biology, Religion, and Medical Humanities degree and Cum Laude Honors. Khalil feels very grateful to the support given to her by God, her parents, sister Nardin, advisors, and friends.
