Hazel Herring Jackson, 85, of Florence, went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, November 6, 2010, while at McLeod Hospice House after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 7, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Dillon, SC with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery directed by Cooper Funeral Home. Immediately following the burial service the family will receive friends back at the church and at other times at the home, located at 2521 Parkland Drive, in Florence, SC. Mrs. Jackson was born in Dillon, SC, on March 19, 1925, the daughter of the late T.B. Herring, Sr. and Minnie Hyatt Herring. A graduate of Dillon High School, Mrs. Jackson represented her school in 1942, winning the state championship in typing. After graduation, she went to work with Dillon Locker Plant and was the initial bookkeeper for Frozen Food and Equipment company which later became Brothers Food Inc. She was a member of the Dillon Professional Women’s Assoc., and The Eastern Star. Mrs. Jackson was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and G.A.’s. At the time of her death, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Florence. The mother of 3 children, Mrs. Jackson entered college in 1963, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in only 3 years with the honor of Summa Cum Laude. She taught school until moving to Wilmington, NC in 1974. The wife of Rev. Horace L. Jackson, Mrs. Jackson was very involved in all of the churches he pastored, including Oakdale Baptist in Fairmont, NC,Franklinton Baptist in Franklinton, NC, and Sunset Park Baptist in Wilmington, NC, as well as the 22 churches he has served as interim pastor. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Rev. Horace L. Jackson of Florence; 2 daughters, Sandra Truax and Susan Turner of Florence; son, Richard D. Jackson (Lynn) of Dillon; brother, T.B. Herring, Jr. (Betty Sue) of Dillon; sister, Frances Price of Floyd Dale; sister-in-law, Grace Herring of Dillon; 6 grandchildren, Spencer (Nikki), Kevin (Susan), Chad, Amber, Ashley (Karla), Amanda; a step grandson, Anthony (Amie); 9 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ezra, Willie, Joe, and Mack Herring; and a sister, Beatrice Taylor. The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Howell, and the many nurses and caretakers at Heritage Home in Florence, and to Dr. Shah and the wonderful, compassionate staff at McLeodhospice House, also in Florence.
