Cherrie Elvington Atkinson died July 24th at the age of 89 in Myrtle Beach. She was born February 28, 1921 in Lake View, SC to William Watson and Lenora Elvington. Marion, SC was her home as a young wife and mother before she made a career in real estate in West Columbia, SC. Her generosity to her family, clients, and friends brought her admiration, love, and success. She built Cherrie Atkinson Realty on honesty and strong work ethics. Many called her “Aunt Cherrie” or “Miss Cherrie”.
She is survived by her daughter Judith Porter of Atlanta, son Richard Atkinson of Myrtle Beach, sister Florence Howell of Charlotte, and 2 grandchildren, Karen Patton in The Woodlands, TX and Russell Atkinson in Madison, MS; as well as many close nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday August 14, 2010 in the sanctuary of Providence Presbyterian Church located at 1112 Hummingbird Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169 with Pastor Michael T. Bragen officiating.
Visitation for Mrs. Atkinson will be from 12:00 Noon until the time of service in the church fellowship hall. There will be a reception at the fellowship hall immediately following services as well. A private committal service will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2010 in Lake View, SC.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, South Carolina Chapter, 3223 Sunset Boulevard, Ste. 100, West Columbia, SC 29169.
